04 March 2020 | By Vicki Sleet

If your little one seems more prone to sneezes and wheezes than other kids, you could be dealing with allergies – here are some common allergy symptoms and signs.

A sniff and a sneeze

How to tell if your child has an allergy and not a cold? In general, a cold will be gone after 10 days of symptoms but if the sniffles and sneezes are sticking around, then chances are you’re dealing with an allergy.

The good news is, most mild allergies can be dealt with at home. “A paediatric anti-histamine syrup can help control symptoms and ease your toddler’s discomfort,” says Clicks Clinic Sister Marina Sumners.

‘Tis the season

Ask any allergy sufferer – the onset of spring and summer can cause havoc. Pollen from blooming flowers and grasses are known for setting off marathon sneezing sessions and the resulting post-nasal drip and itchy eyes can make for a miserable kid.

“A daily saline nose spray helps remove environmental allergy causes – make it part of your daily routine for best results”, says Sr Sumners. For more persistent symptoms not resolving with saline sprays, your doctor will be able to prescribe medication to help take control of the situation.

All in the family

If you’re an allergy sufferer then chances are one or more of your children may have inherited your makeup. Whether its dairy (a known allergen and cause of tummy upset) or dust, knowing what to expect and how you treat your own allergy issues can help in managing your child’s allergies.

Animal matters

Cats and dogs are known causes of allergies and even asthma – it’s the dander (dead skin cells that they naturally shed) that’s the common cause.

Depending on the severity of the allergy, you may choose to wait until your child is older before you get a pet of your own, you could groom your cat or dog more to reduce their shedding or you could choose an animal with a low allergy rating – like a fish or bird.

Dietary causes

Allergies triggered by food or drink are less common than dust or pollen allergies but can be serious depending on the severity of the reaction. Without testing, most people discover an allergy to foodstuffs such as peanuts or shellfish by accident.

If a food allergy is suspected, a dose of anti-histamine syrup can alleviate symptoms like wheezing or urticaria (skin rash triggered by food or drink) after which a visit to your doctor or emergency room is advised.
