Preparing your toddler for their first trip to the hairdresser
Whether it’s their first haircut or time to hand over cutting to the experts, your toddler’s first trip to the hairdresser should be navigated with care.
If, after a busy day, your toddler’s tangled hair resembles a bird’s nest, is getting in their eyes or ears or has dreadlocked itself, it may be time to get some expert haircare and a good cut.
But, before you set off to your stylist, take these tips into consideration, it may help pave the way for a positive first experience that will set them up for a lifetime of happy haircare occasions.
Toddler-friendly professionals
Salons that know the drill – how to calm anxious toddlers and make the experience a fun one are well worth seeking out. Some may have DVD players, books and toys to distract their little clients and they certainly won’t bat an eyelid if your toddler is unsure about the experience and lets everyone know.
Be prepared
As with any new experience, it’s best to prepare your toddler. Try to take them with you to one of your own appointments so they can see the process, avoid using words like “cut” (“trim” is a more toddler-friendly term) and pick a time that works – after they’ve been fed and not over nap time.
Also, some kids are overwhelmed by the thought of wearing a cape – simply pack a different top that can be slipped on afterwards.
Haircare aversion
Don’t worry, this is a common conundrum for many a mom! Taking a child who already hates having their hair brushed or combed to a hairdresser can be a fraught experience.
The night before their first trip, give their hair a good comb through with a detangling spray and if its longer, twist or braid it so that there are minimal knots to comb through at the apppintment.
Distraction action
What’s your best line of defence when faced with any challenging toddler situation? Snacks, of course! Packing a selection of snacks and distractions (like books or small toys) can help keep their minds off the experience.
A small reward for being brave at their first hair appointment can also be a suitable incentive for them to get through it with as little drama as possible.
And once it’s all done? Don’t forget to save a lock of hair to remember the occasion, and to bring out as a reminder of what happens when we go the hairdresser.
