3 Makeup tips to get your glow on this winter

07 November 2019 | Leigh van den Berg

Winter can wreak havoc on our skin, leaving us dry, red and dull. Lucky for us, there are plenty of ways to fake a summer glow no matter the weather.

You’re not imagining it. Your skin does get drier in winter thanks to the chilly temperatures. Cold air is dry air and, in a bid to equalise, it sucks the moisture from its surroundings – including your skin. The result of a face that craves hydration is fine lines, flakiness, redness and dullness. Not a good look. That’s why we got expert advice from makeup artist Tamryn Jefferies on how to bump up your glow factor in the cold months.

Prime before you primp

According to Tamryn, if you start with a craggy canvas, whatever mak-up you apply will end up looking patchy. This is why it’s important to exfoliate to reveal fresh, smoother-looking skin and apply a hydrating moisturiser followed by a mega-moisturising serum.

Your third step should be an illuminating primer. “This will diffuse the look of imperfections, give your makeup something to cling to, ensure it goes on smoothly and give you an instant subtle glow,” Tamryn explains.

Swap powder for liquid

Powder formulas don’t play nicely with dry skin as they can end up settling into fine lines. “By all means, stick with finishing powder if you want to set makeup or blot an oily T-panel, but swap out powder foundations for more hydrating liquid formulations,” says Tamryn. “The same goes for your blush. Cream formulations are a lot more dewy-looking.”

Fake it until you make it

Lastly, to finish your glow up, whip out your highlighter. Again, if you’re showing signs of winter dryness, a cream or liquid product will serve you best. “Highlight the highest points of your face that would reflect light naturally,” says Tamryn. These would be your brow bones, the tops of your cheeks, the bridge of your nose and cupid’s bow.

“If you use a makeup setting spray, ensure it’s one that’s specifically formulated to hydrate and not leave you with a matte-looking finish,” Tamryn advises.
