07 February 2020 | By Renee Fortune

Summer can wreak havoc on your hair - between the heat, humidity and swimming - even the healthiest tresses has its work cut out for it. However, with a little TLC, you can make sure your hair looks gorgeous all season long. Hairstylist, Craig Moses tells us more about how it’s done.

There’s so much to love about summer – good weather, alfresco dining, sunsets, hikes – the list goes on. And summer, of course, is the best time to unleash your inner sun goddess. Unfortunately, your hair is up against two summertime realities – heat and humidity. And those two formidable foes can wreak havoc on your locks. We chat to an expert for some summertime SOS for your hair.

You don’t have to hide from the heat

There’s so much information out there about the damaging effects of heat styling tools like hairdryers and straighteners, but what about UV rays? Are they just as damaging? The answer is a resounding yes. Prolonged exposure to the sun can damage the outer shaft or cuticle of the hair, causing rapid degeneration. Also, your scalp is especially vulnerable to dryness when exposed to the sun.

Here’s what Craig had to say about how to protect your hair before heading into the heat: “It’s time to whip out that heat protection spray that you thought might only be useful for heat styling. Give your hair a few spritzes of heat protection every two hours if you’re out, soaking up some rays. And even better – invest in a good hat!”

When great hair meets humidity

Humidity is the ultimate hair enemy. It’s got the unique ability to cause even the smoothest, silkiest tresses to pack their bags and fly away. That’s why Jayde recommends getting your hands on a product that’s up to the task.

“Anti-static, pro-moisture, anti-frizz – those are the qualities to look for in a product that will make sure humidity doesn’t ruin your good hair day. Depending on the product, you can apply it to wet hair after a swim or to dry hair before heading out. Either way, humidity protection is the way to go when the summer season hits,” said Craig.

Your hair versus saltwater and chlorine

Whether you’re diving into the ocean or a pool, chlorine and seawater can cause extreme dryness and breakage if you don’t give it some extra attention.

“Water babies and aspiring mermaids, listen up – don’t’ forget to protect your hair post-swim. I recommend combing your hair through with a nourishing oil. It’s a great detangler and it will help to combat the drying effect of chemicals, salt and water pollution. And if you can give your hair a rinse with clean, cold water immediately after swimming, even better,” said Craig.
