4 Make-up trends to ditch now

26 November 2019 | Helen Clemson

Some makeup looks just don’t work for everyone, and that’s OK! It’s time to remove these trends from your makeup repertoire.

Just because it’s trending on the catwalks or celebrities are sporting it on their skin, doesn’t mean a makeup look is right for you. In fact, certain trends are downright no-go zones. Makeup and lash artist Sarah Hoberman walks us through four cosmetics fads to stay well away from – and what to wear instead.

Overdone concealer

While many women typically overdo concealer under their eye area (making the delicate and often dry area look lined, old and even more dehydrated), even worse is using too much all over the face. Sarah’s advice to avoid this makeup no-no is reaching for hydration instead. “Rather overdo your eye cream and add a touch of concealer.” Another concealer pitfall she cautions against is the Kim Kardashian look of painting on a triangle shape. In other words, so much concealer application that both the eye and cheek areas are overdone and around 80% of your skin is covered in product, she explains. “What’s the point of foundation?!” she adds.

Big, thick false lashes

Not everyone can sport enormous-sized falsies. Whether you are able to wear thick and lush fake lashes depends entirely on the size of your eyes and their shape as well as the shape of your eye area and face. You also need to consider the proportions of your eye area relative to the rest of your face, Sarah suggests. “When choosing extensions, forget about the black opaque curtain look (they make eyes smaller and upper lids look disproportionately heavy) and rather opt for a natural half set of extensions with graded lengths.” For an even more natural look, Sarah’s best go-to is a lash lift (also known as a perm) that curls lashes semi-permanently in a gentle manner. This type of treatment lasts up to seven weeks and can be used in conjunction with mascara.

Overdrawn lips

Sarah’s pet hate, this technique only looks good on stage as it can never appear natural close up. “Your lip skin versus the skin around your mouth are two totally different textures and that’s why it looks awful and fake,” she says. The solution is a simple one, explains Sarah, “Use lip plumping products and stick to light colours and glossy textures when aiming to plump up your pout.”

Over-filled brows

“Work with what you’ve got as overdrawn brows look dated and can make a beautiful face very harsh,” says Sarah. She goes onto explain that even if the inside corners are just two millimetres too close to each other, it will give you the appearance of a constant frown. To sort out thinning brows and cheat a subtle look, she recommends you stop colouring in with powder (it gives a severe block of shading) and rather apply it in a stroke-like motion that mimics the natural look of hair.
