5 Essentials for your summer make-up bag

19 November 2020 | By S'nothando Mthi

It’s time to update your make-up bag and give your skin the love and attention it needs to stay refreshed during these warmer days - we’re talking hydration, protection and glow! In the spirit of staying fresh and fab, here are 5 summer essentials that you need to add to your make-up bag this season.

Sunscreen

You’ve heard it time and time again -  using sunscreen is one of the most important steps in your skincare routine, whether it’s summer or winter. “Skin cancer rates are reaching epidemic proportions in people under the age of 40,” says dermatologist Dr Kavita Mariwalla. Studies have shown that the most effective way to prevent skin cancer and other issues caused by sun damage - like aging and dark spots - is to use sunscreen. Popping a tube of sunscree into your make-up bag or handbag should be a no-brainer, no matter your age or what you have planned for the day.

All-in-one blush and lipstick stain

Few things bring a good summer glow together than a little colour on your lips and cheeks. If you're not keen on wearing a full face of make-up during a hot Mzansi summer’s day, a blush and lipstick stain duo is an easy make-up bag essential to brighten your face in a few seconds, without leaving your face feeling heavy and caked.

Nothing comes close to the iconic The Body Shop Lip & Cheek Stain - available in three shades, we'd suggest stocking up on two shades - one for summer, and one for winter - so you can make sure you always have the perfect shade for your skin tone, no matter how much sun you are (or aren't) getting.

Blotting tissues

Blotting tissues are a lighter replacement for heavy setting or mattifying powders, and effectively reduce shine on the face - absorbing excess sweat and oil. Added bonus: they generally contain a small amount of powder to help mattify any lingering shine, without you needing to carry a separate brush to apply.

Simply dab a blotting paper on your forehead, nose, chin and any shiny areas on the face. If you end up using it for your whole face, lightly spray on your favourite face mist afterwards to rehydrate and set the excess powder from the blotting paper. Which brings us to our next make-up bag must-have…

Facial mist

Keeping a hydrating face spray in your summer makeup bag is one of those things you think you don’t need, but can’t get enough off once you start using it. With so many options available - whether your skin needs hydration, mattifying - or even one to set your make-up - you're bound to find your perfect mist match.

Inside tip: Keep yours in the fridge for a cool, refreshing treat for your skin when you come home from a day outdoors or in the sun.

Primer

We love a good lightweight and oil-free primer that just glides on to the skin and gives you a flawless finish when you apply foundation. Dr Mariwalla explains, “You don’t have to apply primer all over your face. You only need to apply it where you actually need it which is often your T-zone, or areas where you get oily or where your pores are the most prominent”. Primers are super lightweight and help keep your face beat in tact, especially if you’re out and about in the sun.

Choosing the right primer for your skin type is also important. Dr Mariwella advises  “Choosing a mattifying primer if you have oily skin, but if you have dry skin, looking out for a gel or hydrating primer to provide a good base for your foundation, but not dry out your skin”.
