5 Tips to help you master the art of matte lips
Matte lipsticks are showing up all over this season. And it's no surprise why: they’re long-lasting, easy-to-apply, and make lips look fresh and full.
We’re welcoming back a ’90s makeup look with open arms – matte lipstick! A favourite of stars like Beyoncé and Kylie Jenner, this fun beauty trend is definitely one to try this summer. But even makeup artists agree that this isn’t the easiest trend to crack, so we’ve called on a pro to help us nail the look.
Beauty guru from Oz Beauty Expert, Bonnie Gillies says, “Matte makeup is currently a big thing, and nothing screams sexy sophistication like warm, earthy, matte tones. Previously thought to be somewhat dull and dated, matte makeup is definitely back with a vengeance.” Bonnie shares her tips for acing the matte look below.
Scrub-a-dub dub
Begin by exfoliating using a scrub or even your old toothbrush (trust us!). This will remove the build-up of dead skin cells that cause an uneven texture. A smooth foundation is essential when wearing matte lipsticks, as they tend to enhance flakes and cracks.
A bit of TLC
Reduce the appearance of dryness and add moisture to your lips by applying a lip balm. Leave the balm to soak in fully before continuing. Top tip: When you remove your matte lipstick at the end of the day, make sure you apply lip balm again so your skin can recover its moisture.
Get tracing
Outline your lips using a liner that matches your matte lippie. By using a liner you can form the shape of your lips easier, even adding slight changes to enhance your natural shape. Lip liner also helps the product to sit longer, so you won’t have to reapply your colour as often!
Add layers
Time to apply the lipstick! This should be done in light layers. Why? This will allow you to build up the product, creating a bolder look without the dryness. Score. It also means that when it comes to removing the product, there will be less force on the lips which prevents any damage.
Neaten it up
Couldn’t quite stay in the lines? Don’t worry, there’s no need to reapply – just use a concealer to clean up the edges of your lips. Now all that’s left is to rock your matte look with confidence. Enjoy!
