Matte, satin, lustre – when it comes to lipstick, there are so many different types of finishes that it’s hard to keep track! Still, if you’re looking to create a particular effect, you’ll need to understand the terms. We chatted to Tarryn Fox, a “pro lippie whisperer” and makeup artist, to learn the lingo.

Matte

“A matte-textured lipstick is exactly what the name suggests. It has zero shine,” says Tarryn. “Personally, I think dark matte shades like plum or black as well as nude mattes can look very trendy, but steer clear of matte lipstick if your lips are dry as they can enhance cracks and flakes.”

Satin

Also referred to as a cream or lustre finish, Tarryn says satin-textured lipsticks have a slight sheen to them. “These are typically more moisturising and a nice choice for winter or if you tend to have dry lips.”

Frost

“Frosted lipstick has a metallic or shimmery-looking finish. A bronze frosty lip is great for summer if you’re wanting a beachy glow,” says Tarryn.

Sheer

Tarryn says sheer lipsticks have slightly less pigment but are typically more hydrating. They slick on like a balm or gloss and deliver a transparent wash of colour. “The shinier or glossier these are, the more luscious your lips will look,” she says.
