#ClicksSalonAtHome: How to give yourself a spa-worthy facial at home

03 April 2020 | By Leigh van den Berg

Whether your skin is in desperate need of some intensive pampering - or, you just find yourself at home during lockdown with some extra time on your hands - you thankfully don’t have to go further than your bathroom for a spa-worthy facial.

Step 1: Cleanse

It all starts with clean skin. Tie up your hair, slip on a headband - then light a scented candle and put on your most relaxing playlist to help bring that luxury spa feeling to your bathroom. Next, perform a double cleanse by massaging your skin with cotton pads soaked in micellar water, which helps remove superficial dirt and make-up. Then, move on to a creamy cleanser which will help remove more stubborn dirt and grime and leave you with a fresh, clean face.

Step 2: Exfoliate

The dry, dead skin cells that dull your natural radiance won’t shift with a cleanser alone. Using a gentle scrub with grains that are small and in a high concentration will get the job done, while being less likely to irritate sensitive skin. Avoid anything with large, irregularly-shaped particles, such as ground walnuts, as these can cause micro-tears in your skin.

Step 3: Treat

Any serum you apply to freshly exfoliated skin will always penetrate a little deeper. Now’s the time to apply a treatment product to address your biggest skincare concern. If it’s pigmentation, look out for products promising to brighten. More worried about wrinkles? You’ll want an anti-ageing serum full of collagen-encouraging vitamin C. Co-incidentally, vitamin C is a great skin-brightener too.

Step 4: Hydrate with a mask

To finish your at-home facial, instead of applying your regular moisturiser, give your skin a mega-blast of hydration using any mask that contains hyaluronic acid. This magically moisturising ingredient is hygroscopic, meaning it can attract and hold 1000 times its weight in water. When you’re done, a plump, supple-looking complexion will be yours to enjoy - from the comfort of your bathroom.
