A good cat eye never goes out of style. Just ask A-lister Angelina Jolie who’s been wearing her winged eyeliner for over a decade! Still, creating her signature look does require a bit of skill. As most of us don’t have access to a glam squad to help us get red carpet ready (hey, we can dream!), we’ve done the next best thing and asked for advice from a pro. Makeup artist Tamryn Jefferies shares her five steps to pulling off the perfect feline flick.

Step 1

Before you begin, ensure you’re using the right tools. In this case, Tamryn says you’ll want a felt tip liquid liner with a fine- to medium-sized precision tip for accuracy. Alternatively, a cone-shaped kajal pencil with a fine tip can work well too. “Because the pencil has a large surface area, you can lay it flat against your eyelid and drag it along to create a more even-looking line,” she says.

Step 2

The "flick" is the trickiest part to get right because you want both eyes to match. This means both flicks need to be the same length and at the same angle. For this reason, it's best to add your flicks first. If one is a little off, it's much easier to erase just that than have to wipe off an entire line. “Start at the outer corner of each eye and draw the line outwards and upwards. Don’t pull your skin taught to do this, or you’ll end up with a misplaced flick,” says Tamryn. “Looking downwards over a mirror that’s lying flat on your dressing table can help you work on an eye that’s half-closed but still able to see.”

Step 3

If it’s a subtle cat eye that you’re after, you can then connect your flick to the line that runs from the inner corner of each eye to the outer corner. If you’d like something more dramatic, however, just make your flick thicker. Rather than run over the same line multiple times, Tamryn suggests you draw another line from the sharp, tail end of the flick back down to your lash line to create a “triangle” that you can colour in.

Step 4

Draw in the rest of your liner, as you normally would, starting from the inner corner of each eye and extending outwards to connect to your flick. “Build up this line so that it’s thinner in the inner corner but is slightly wider at the outer corner. This way it ‘flows’ into your flick,” says Tamryn.

Step 5

You're all done! Finish off your look with two coats of your favourite mascara and revel in your flirty new look. Also, take note of Tamryn's final tip: “Practise makes perfect. If you really want to master the look, make creating a cat eye the last thing you do every night just before you take off all your makeup. Eventually, you'll get to the point where you create something so gorgeous you'll suddenly want to go out, not go to bed.”
