Our top 5 beauty trends for 2020

06 January 2020 | By Leigh van den Berg

From complicated multi-step skincare routines to ombre acrylics-shaped like daggers – many of 2019’s beauty trends were pretty “extra”. Fortunately, 2020 welcomes a new list of trends that will appeal to those who like their glamour on the easy-breezy side of life.

Embracing the hair you were born with

Don’t toss your flat iron or curling wand just yet, but natural-looking hair is making a comeback. The goal is hair that looks air-dried as opposed to styled. This means that if you’ve got curls or waves, don’t straighten them. If your hair’s naturally straight, let it be. The same goes for colour. This is the year you don’t want to look like you’ve just stepped out of a salon. Instead, invest in treatments that can keep your hair beautifully hydrated and free of frizz.

Lipgloss makes a comeback

While the trendiest eyes will go matte, lips will be doing just the opposite. This means you can put away your burgeoning matte liquid lipstick collection in favour of super shiny lipgloss. According to the catwalks, any shade will do, you just want to ensure they have a brilliant, wet-look finish. Also, while you’re at it, find something that contains lip-loving ingredients like antioxidants and hydrating hyaluronic acid.

Skin is in

Heavy foundation, over sculpting with contouring powder and slapping on high beam highlighters was fun, but now it’s done. This year’s face is much more fresh-looking. Still, that doesn’t mean you won’t be wearing make-up. The idea is to create a “natural” canvas with sheer foundations and tinted moisturisers that even out your skin tone but won’t hide any freckles. Then, any imperfections can be hidden with a light-reflecting concealer.

Go for green!

Kiss the smokey eye goodbye. The new hue to crave is sage green as well as earthy shades like brown and taupe. You’re also going to want to step away from anything too pearlescent or glittery. This year’s eye shadow textures are satin or matte. To make things even easier, these new naturals are to be worn on their own. Dramatic cut creases and multi-shaded creations are taking a back seat in favour of a simple wash.

New adventures in eyeliner

While eye shadow moves into a gear best described as “neutral”, those who like a pop of colour can feel free to get adventurous with eyeliner, one of few things that’s getting bolder in 2020. This means stepping away from the blacks and the browns and having a bit of fun with jewel tones like purple and turquoise as well as far out hues like fuchsia or fiery orange.
