Spring’s biggest makeup trend: The lightly stained pink lip

07 November 2019 | Helen Clemson

Pink-stained lips are the “your-lips-but-better” trend we’re seeing everywhere this spring. From brunch with friends to the office, we’ll be wearing this one all season long.

Few beauty looks are as pretty as a pink-stained lip. While many trendsetters contrast the look with bright, bold eyes, it looks just as good paired with soft nude tones – making it a great lip for any occasion.

If you need a little colour inspiration, take a look at the recent runway shows where models from several houses rocked the trend. Fashion label Monse used a stained pink lip, while Badgley Mischka opted for fresh pink on lips as well as eyes and cheeks.

Picking your pink

The secret to finding one that looks great on you? “I always look at the tone visible in my client’s bare lip,” says makeup artist Ryno Mulder. “Is it a browny pink? Orangey pink? A true red pink or a pale purple tone?” Use a lip stain in the same colour family, he advises.

How to get the rose-tinted look

The key to this look is starting with a well-moisturised, soft and plump pout. Ryno suggests using the tiniest amount of pink, long-wear lipstick – regular or liquid – to paint your mouth. “You can also pat it on to your mouth,” he says. “Top it off with lip balm and you’ll have flushed, just-been-kissed lips in no time!”
