Thinking of trying a new lipstick shade? Go for it – especially if want to add an edge to your look. Trendy colours can be a tricky if you’re used to a more conservative colour palette though, so if you’re considering yellow, green or black – whatever the mode du jour is – our expert is here to hold your hand.

Prep your pout

“Most importantly, your lips need to be well-prepped, moisturised and smooth,” says makeup artist Ryan Mulder. “An unusual colour will naturally draw attention and no matter the shade, if your lips look flaky, your look won’t fly.”

Next up, think base. Ever wondered how dramatic lip colours look so good on a perfectly groomed celeb or model? You can bet their foundation is flawlessly applied to achieve that much-needed contrast with an even complexion. “Extreme colours will pick up any discolouration in your skin if your coverage is too light,” says Ryan.

Start with one small switch up

Perhaps it’s about baby steps. Opting for a bright red when you’re used to wearing pale pink is an easier jump than switching to a real trend colour for example. “Finding the best shade, even if it is an editorial look like navy blue, is about identifying your natural lip tone,” says Ryan. “Is it pink, brown, red or a cool tone? Finding your neutral lip colour is the basis for selecting va-va-voom shades. A lip colour in the same undertone as your natural lip shade will give your face a lift.”

Rules to live by

The tried-and-tested rule of dark eyes, light lips or light eyes, dark lips is actually a good bet. You’ve got to be pretty special to do the opposite and make it work for you but, generally, “unless you are genetically blessed with a modelesque face, an all-over heavy look or all-over neutral look can make you look over- or under-groomed,” says Ryan. And we definitely don’t want that! “Perfectly matching your lipstick colour to your outfit is a little Barbie. Rather pick up a tone in your outfit and opt for a similar but softer shade.”

And what about my teeth?

Interestingly, a trendy blue lip is one of the best ways to make your teeth look whiter and brighter. Experiment to find the shade that does it for you. If you’re not feeling that brave, try a blue-based red, purple-blue berry, pinky nude or cool-toned pink. That’ll do it!
