The truth about salon-priced shampoo and conditioner

12 November 2019 | By Helen Clemson

Shampoo is shampoo, right? Well, maybe not. We look at the main differences between salon and store brands – and, when you need to splurge.

“If you have healthy hair, buy whichever homecare hair products you like”, says hairstylist Shelene Shaer, co-owner of Tanaz Hair. “However, if you bleach your hair, have issues with it or it’s damaged, fragile, broken and unkempt-looking, you need a superb after-care range”, she goes on to say.

And, if you’re concerned about the cash outlay, Shaer advises that you think of the investment like this: “You wouldn’t buy a silk dress and then just throw it in the washing machine when it came time to clean it.”

Same theory applies if you’re forking hard-earned money for professional colour treatments and a cut, wash and blow. “If you’re investing a lot in salon colour and treatments, then you want to match that in your hair care products,” she says.

What exactly are the benefits of salon-quality shampoo and conditioner?

Shaer reports that the benefits of salon-prescribed shampoo and conditioner are two-fold; first off, your hair stylist knows your strands. “The main difference between choosing salon and over-the-counter haircare products is that what you think of your hair needs is a misconception.”

The alarming truth is – apparently – that you don’t actually have a clue and “you’re giving it the wrong diagnosis,” says Shaer. That means money wasted – even if you feel your OTC products aren’t that pricey – on shampoo and conditioner that isn’t properly treating your locks.

It’s all about the quality of ingredients

Next up, salon products also benefit from the crème da la crème of available active ingredients in your formulation thanks to the newest research and development. “Quality is all ingredient based”, explains Shaer. “And so, if you demand the latest and greatest for your strands, it might well be worth reaching for professional products”.
