Nobody wants dull, dry or ashy-looking skin. Here’s how to get your glow back.

There are many reasons your complexion can look less than perfect. Identifying what the cause may be is your first port of call.

Dull skin: The main culprits

“If your skin looks dull, it’s likely caused by your lifestyle and daily habits,” says dermatologist Dilshaad Asmal. “Smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, alcohol, dehydration, poor diet, using the incorrect facial products, and stress can all contribute to a dull complexion.” Healthy inside equals healthy outside – so start there.

Are you committing any of these skin sins?

“Smoking and not wearing SPF every day are two of the worst skin sins. Just don’t.” Next, make sure you are not overdoing it on the alcohol consumption and that you are sufficiently hydrated. “I cannot stress enough how much water contributes to clear and healthy skin – you can use the most expensive skincare products in the world, but if you are not drinking enough water, it’ll all be in vain.” Eating a healthy, antioxidant-rich diet will also promote skin health and a glowy appearance.

Then, get moving. Exercise improves blood flow and your blood delivers oxygen to the skin, which is vital for healthy cells. Sweating also clears out your pores and promotes rejuvenation. And being physical will also aid in reducing stress, which can directly affect your skin.

Complementing a healthy lifestyle with the right skincare products

“Make sure you are using the right products for your skin,” continues Dilshaad. Using products formulated for dry skin when you actually have combination skin is going to give you less than ideal results. If you’re not sure, speak to a skincare consultant the next time you go product shopping or book an appointment with a dermatologist – it’ll be worth every penny. “You need to exfoliate gently two to three times a week too for optimal skin health and that glow that everyone is after.”

When to see a doctor

If you’re doing all the above and your skin is still not the epitome of radiant health, make sure you are getting enough sleep, and also check your hormones. “Hormonal changes or imbalances can dramatically alter the appearance of your skin, so don’t disregard that,”’ she says. Check in with a health professional to get to the bottom of the problem.
