How to treat common skincare problems

28 February 2023 | By Neil Doveton

To help you find exactly what you need, we’ve highlighted the three most common skincare problems men face and the products recommended to combat them.

The great thing about men’s grooming products is their ability to transform the way we look. Not in a drastic surgical kind of way, but the way you can use products to positively ‘groom’ your appearance, leaving you looking (and feeling) one hundred times sharper.

But these transformations are never more apparent than when you’re trying to solve a specific problem – that’s where the right product can really transform your look and have a huge impact on your confidence.

Spots and/or breakouts is a condition that can stretch well beyond your teens. Aside from maintaining a thorough skincare routine, there are a number of targeted spot treatments that can help keep them to a minimum. Armed with key bacteria fighting ingredients these blemish banishers also reduce inflammation and help speed up the healing process, so while they’re not necessarily a preventative against future breakouts, when one does occur, you’ve got it under control.

Cetaphil DermaControl Oil Control Face Wash is specially formulated for acne-prone skin and gently helps to wash away excess oil and impurities that can clog pores and cause spots.

Eskamel Pimple and Acne Ointment is effective in treating pimples, blemishes, and acne. It has mild antiseptic, keratolytic and exfoliative properties.

Protex Pimple Control Face Scrub is packed with exfoliants, and its formula cleans deeply, removes dead skin cells, and provides protection against germs that can cause pimples and blackheads.

A common ailment, when shaving rash strikes it can be painful and unsightly. That’s not to say there aren’t ways to mitigate your neck and chin erupting. When it comes to shaving, a shave oil will allow your razor to glide smoothly across your face, keeping irritation to an absolute minimum. But it’s your post shave products that have the most important job of all – to put lost moisture back into your skin, calming and soothing redness and inflammation.

Vaya Smooth Roll-On For Him gets to work fast to help relieve ingrown hairs, razor bumps and burn, as well as pimples. Visible results within as little as 48 hours.

Sorbet Man Post Shave Balm is formulated with a blend of water, salicylic acid and horse chestnut extract to soothe razor sting and skin irritation. It also reduces redness and inflammation and prevents razor bumps.

The Body Shop Macca Root & Aloe Calming Post-Shave Water Gel is enriched with soothing Peruvian maca root and Community Trade organic aloe vera from Mexico.

When it comes to combatting oily skin it’s crucial to use the right products. Daily cleansing and regular exfoliation are key. Look for products with oil absorbing properties like clay, and salicylic acid, which penetrates through sebum, dissolving any blackhead-causing plugs and eliminating acne-causing bacteria. To add moisture without grease, opt for lightweight, oil-free moisturisers especially formulated for oily skin (they’re usually labelled ‘oil control’).
Clinique For Men Oil Control Exfoliating Tonic is a daily exfoliator for normal to oily skins. Removes excess oil, helping to minimise oil build-up, unclog pores and maintain clearer skin.

Sorbet Man Oil Control Face Wash (R85.99) is a deep cleansing face wash that is specially formulated to gently control sebum production for long-lasting shine control.

Nivea Men Oil Control Gel Moisturiser is a multi-effective and oil free gel moisturiser that helps fight the main problems of oily skin, providing long lasting shine control and helping to control breakouts.
