We’ve all had that moment: you catch your reflection and your skin looks drained and weary, even though you feel wide awake. The reason? Your skin often shows signs of fatigue before your body does, quietly signaling that it needs a little extra care. According to Dr Amanda Visagie, a specialist dermatologist based in Johannesburg, it all comes down to circadian skin rhythms, ‘barrier fatigue’, and how you support your skin at night.

Your skin has its own clock

Just like your body, your skin follows a 24-hour biological cycle, known as circadian rhythm. “During the day, the skin focuses on protection,” explains Dr Visagie. Antioxidant activity ramps up, and the skin barrier strengthens to defend against UV rays, pollution, and other environmental stressors.

At night, the focus shifts to repair and regeneration. Blood flow increases, cell turnover accelerates, and collagen production peaks. However, trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) is higher while you sleep, meaning your skin loses moisture more easily. This is why your nighttime routine should prioritise hydration and recovery.

Why skin shows fatigue first

“Your skin often looks tired before you feel exhausted,” says Dr Visagie. Daily exposure to sunlight, pollution, and stress takes a toll, and lifestyle habits like smoking, alcohol, and dehydration can make it worse. Even mild dehydration can make fine lines stand out, while ongoing environmental stress can leave skin looking dull and uneven. Your complexion often acts as an early warning system, showing strain before your body does.

Understanding ‘barrier fatigue

Another reason your skin may look worn out is barrier fatigue. Your skin barrier (the outer layer of your skin) protects you from the outside world. When it becomes overworked or weakened, your skin struggles to retain moisture and repair itself. This can show up as redness, dryness, sensitivity, breakouts, or uneven texture. Over-exfoliating, using harsh products, following complicated routines, or not getting enough sleep can all worsen barrier fatigue. Environmental stress plays a big role, too.

How sleep affects skin repair

Sleep is essential for skin repair. “When we sleep, our skin performs its most intensive repair work,” explains Dr Visagie. Poor sleep or too little rest can reduce collagen production, increase stress hormones, weaken the barrier, and even trigger inflammation. Chronic sleep deprivation has been linked to accelerated ageing, and even a few nights of poor rest can leave skin looking dull and fatigued.

Night-time skincare that really works

Supporting your skin while you sleep doesn’t have to be complicated. A solid nighttime routine focuses on removing the day’s impurities, treating your skin concerns, and hydrating to aid overnight repair. Start by cleansing to remove makeup and SPF, then apply targeted treatments, and finish with a moisturiser to prevent water loss.

When it comes to ingredients, retinoids, peptides, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and antioxidants all help with cell renewal, barrier repair, and hydration. You don’t need to use them all at once, but a routine tailored to your skin’s needs makes a real difference.

It’s equally important to avoid common mistakes, such as over-exfoliating, layering too many actives, skipping moisturiser, not removing makeup properly, sleeping too little, or ignoring lifestyle factors. “Your night-time routine should be restorative- think repair and replenish, not experimentation,” says Dr Visagie.
