Pharmacological action:
Small amounts of vitamin B1 and B2 are well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral doses. These vitamins are widely distributed to most body tissues, and appear in breast milk. Excess vitamin B1 and B2 is excreted in the urine unchanged or as metabolites. Pyridoxine is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral doses, which is then stored mainly in the liver. Excess amounts are excreted unchanged in the urine. Pyridoxine is involved mainly in amino acid metabolism, and is also involved in carbohydrate and fat metabolism and is required for the formation of haemoglobin. Vitamin B12 which is absorbed by gastrointestinal tract, stored in the liver and excreted in the bile, occurs in the body mainly as mecobalamin and cobamamide which act as coenzymes in nucleic acid synthesis. Mecobalamin is also closely involved with folic acid in several important metabolic pathways. The partial absorption of zinc occurs in the gastrointestinal tract and is distributed throughout the body with the highest concentrations found in muscle, bone, skin, eye, and prostatic fluids. About one-third of magnesium is absorbed from the small intestine offer oral doses and is an essential body electrolyte which is a cofactor in numerous enzyme systems in the human body.

Serum concentrations may be decreased by use of oral contraceptives. The absorption of zinc may be reduced by iron supplements, penicillamine, phosphorus-containing preparations, and tetracyclines.
