You may debate the necessity of a toner, but it’s important as it balances your skin’s pH levels (especially beneficial if you suffer from oily skin) and removes any remaining impurities.
2. A moisturiser with an SPF
A non-negotiable when it comes to skincare, you need a facial moisturiser with a high SPF (most dermatologists recommend an SPF of 30). If, however, you do not want to incorporate sun protection into your beauty routine, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen separately.
Remember to also cover your ears, neck, décolletage, arms and hands as these areas are most exposed to the sun.
3. Night cream
After a day suffering the onslaught of sunrays, pollution and stress, your skin needs a good night cream to help it recover. Look for a product rich in antioxidants, salicylic acid, alpha hydroxyl acid or retinol to protect, moisturise and stimulate collagen production for firmer, younger-looking skin.
4. A scrub
A fine-grain facial scrub is great for refining skin texture. It removes dead cells and impurities, and allows skincare products to penetrate deeper for better results. A body scrub is also a good idea as it exfoliates and improves circulation.
Serums offer a targeted approach to specific concerns, such as dehydration, fine lines and wrinkles, or pigmentation. Apply it after your toner, before your moisturiser.
6. Eye cream
Just like a serum, eye creams target a specific concern: be it dark circles, puffiness or crow’s feet, and are specifically formulated to work on the fine skin around the eyes. According to research, the younger you start using an eye cream, the better as it keeps the area well moisturised and you looking younger. Remember, it is not an anti-ageing product.
A primer is a good idea, especially in summer. This product will provide a better base for your make-up to stick to – ensuring it lasts longer. It also gives skin a lovely smooth appearance smoothing out pores and fine lines.
8. Face wipes
You might not have the energy to cleanse your face twice at the end of a long day – or night – but if you’ve worn heavy make-up or lots of sunscreen, it’s a good idea to remove as much product as you can with these nifty wipes before washing your face so that your cleanser works to its optimum level. Wipes are also a must for travelling!
9. Hand Cream
Dry hands and cuticles, as well as age spots can make your hands appear much older than they are. Opt for a rich, moisturizing, but non-greasy formula to look after them every day.
10. Base coat for your nails
A good base coat will prevent your nails from breaking as well as discolouring. Because it smooths the nail surface, it will also help nail polish glide on smoother and stick better.
