5 Tips to make your lipstick last all day

You never have to choose between bold lipstick and long-lasting color again. We share 5 tips to make sure your lipstick lasts all day.

27 September 2019

Red lipstick never goes out of fashion but it can slide off your mouth in a million frustrating ways, be it bleeding over your lipline or abandoning you for a coffee cup. To help make yours stays put, we got expert advice from make-up artist Andrew Saint James.

Step 1: Smooth

“Dry, flaky lips are never a good foundation for lipstick, no matter how hydrating your tube promises to be,” says Saint James. To get off to a good start, buff away dead skin using a gentle, hydrating exfoliator especially formulated for your lips.

Step 2: Prime

You don’t need a fancy lip primer to help keep your lipstick in place. “Use a lip or foundation brush to blend a dash of concealer along your lip line to avoid unsightly bleeding,” says Saint James.

Step 3: Line

“Lip liner can even out the shape of your lips if you pick a formula that’s waxy enough. Create a border that prevents your lipstick from bleeding into the fine lines around your mouth”, says Saint James.

Step 4: Colour

Pick your lipstick wisely. Formulations that are billed as glossy or ultra-hydrating will offer more moisture, but will also be more likely to slide off your lips, says Saint James. “If you want colour that sticks around, look out for matte shades, stains and formulations that simply promise to stay all day.”

Step 5: Set

To set your lips, Saint James has a two-step trick. First, separate a facial tissue into a single ply and use it to blot. Next, use a powder brush to apply a dusting of a blusher that’s a similar shade to your lipstick. “You can then applying another coat of lipstick and you’ll be all set,” says Saint James.
