7 steps to great hair

We've got your seven-step plan to winter hair heaven!

Did you know?

If you’re using more heat styling tools than usual, invest in specialised products to help your hair take the heat.

1 Get a trim

We all know the winter cold zaps the moisture from your hair, but did you know that dryness starts at the ends? If you go for months on end without a trim, the splits in the damaged ends creep further up the hair shaft. Get a trim once every eight weeks.

2 Go dark!

This season’s hottest shades are dark chocolates, juicy plums and fiery reds. You owe it to yourself to experiment! Permanent colorants will also cover grey hair, or try a semi-permanent colour first to test-drive a darker shade.

3 Switch shampoos

Treat dry winter locks to a moisturising shampoo.

4 Apply a mask

If you find your tresses are still taking strain from winter dryness, treat yourself to a once-a-week pamper session using a deeply moisturising mask or hot oil treatment.

5 Detox

The only downside of switching to richer, more moisturising products is that they could cause your hair to become heavy or lank from product build-up. The solution? Invest in a good clarifying shampoo. Use it once every two weeks.

6 Amp up your equipment

Your hairdryer is your best friend in winter, but blasting your locks on a daily basis could cause brittle hair. Invest in a good hairdryer that’s at least 1 300W. Anything below that takes too long to dry your hair. Ideally you want it exposed to heat for as little time as possible.

7 Go ionic

Ionic hairdryers and styling tools give off negative ions, which keep the cuticle flat, trap moisture within each strand and create a shinier, more voluminous look. If you’re looking for the top-of-the-line innovation in ionic technology, opt for tourmaline. For instance, a tourmaline hairdryer generates by far the most negative ions and can dry your hair by up to 70-percent faster than a non-ionic hairdryer!

Top tip

Battling with winter static? When you’re finished styling, spritz a little hairspray onto your hairbrush and run it through your hair from root to tip.
