How to cross off your Christmas shopping list in one day

Dreading your festive shopping this year? Not sure when you’ll be able to squeeze it in, in between all the holiday must-do’s, end-of-year events and stuff that needs to get done before your vacation guests arrive? Never fear! We’ve drawn up an action plan that will help you to cross off your entire festive shopping list in one day. Here you go!

Get your list drawn up

First things first – know who you’re shopping for and what you intend to get them. If there is one thing that will a) waste a lot of time, and b) blow your budget, it’s a lack of planning in this respect. If you are feeling a little uninspired with regard to gifts for one or two people on your list, make a point of deciding on an upper spend limit and stick to it.

TOP TIP: A voucher from a store like Clicks is a great option when you’re feeling stuck – there are so many nice things a recipient could choose from. Plus, you can buy it online!

Choose the day

Once you know what you’re shopping for, choose a day and block it out on your calendar. Ideally, you want this to be sooner rather than later. Bonus points if you can find a way to do it on a weekday before the school holidays start. Extra bonus points if you can manage to get a sitter for the kids or get it done while they’re at school so there are even fewer distractions while you power through your list.
TOP TIP: Wear comfortable shoes (there will be lots of walking!) and remember to take along your reusable shopping bags so you don’t have to take any needless plastic home.

Take along a dependable second-in-command

If at all possible, take along a dependable second-in-command who can help you to divide and conquer. Some people are lucky enough to have a spouse that falls into this category (never let them go!), while others may have to rustle up a friend or family member. Having another person there is great when you want to get a head-start on queues – one person can stand in the line while the other does the rounds. You could also split the shopping list down the middle and tackle various stores simultaneously.

Map out your route

Make the most of your time on your festive shopping day by mapping out your route beforehand. If you plan on going to more than one retail destination (e.g. two or three different malls), take some time to plot out your driving route, and keep in mind that you may encounter traffic at certain times of day (e.g. morning work traffic, afternoon school traffic, etc.).
Next up, map your route inside each mall. There is no need to waste needless time crisscrossing the centre – decide at which end you want to start, find parking there and order your shopping list according to the mall’s shop layout. This may seem a little overboard, but you would not believe how much time this shaves off.

Take advantage of seasonal niceties

Certain malls make a point of offering value-added services over the holidays. This includes things like extended trading hours and complimentary gift wrapping (or very well-priced gift wrapping). Take advantage of these niceties if you can by shopping later in the evening when it’s nice and quiet, and dropping off your gifts for wrapping while you move from one store to the next.
