Beards: the great comeback

Some of Hollywood's hottest stars enjoy sporting facial hair. We show you how to pull off the look in style.

Ryan Gosling

Ryan's style is simple to copy. Essentially, he's sporting a moustache, slight goatee and a little bit of fuzz left in the centre of his chin, called a soul patch, but he's grown a bit of stubble around his jaw line so that the soul patch meets the stubble on his chin.

To get the look, don't take the blade all the way down to the edge of your jaw. Instead, leave a few centimetres of hair going up the side of your face. Later you can vary the thickness of this with a facial hair trimmer or razor.

You'll also see that the hair on either side of Ryan's chin creeps upwards, as though it wants to meet with the ends of his moustache. Take this into account when you shave, but be sure to leave a gap between the two. Ryan has also left the hair on his neck to grow. You can do the same, but don't forget to trim the hair on the back of your neck with either a body groomer or hair clippers.

Johnny Depp

Johnny’s style is similar to Ryan's but has a slightly cleaner look. He is also wearing a moustache, slight goatee and a little bit of fuzz left in the centre of his chin but none is attached to the other.

To get the look, keep your razor away from your upper lip when you shave. Facial hair appears first at the corners of the upper lips before covering the whole upper-lip area. Only when the moustache becomes thicker and more visible, should you start trimming it. When you shave your cheeks, stop just as you reach your jaw line so as to grow a bit of fuzz. Johnny has shaved his neck to give the look a cleaner finish. Be sure to do the same.

When shaving your chin, leave a little patch in the centre of it. Johnny's soul patch is slightly lighter than the thicker hair on his chin.

George Clooney

Want a full-on beard like George? Simply stop shaving. Growing a beard can take up to four weeks and despite a popular belief that shaving in between will cause it to grow faster, it won’t. For the first few days, you might look a bit unkempt, so it's best to pick a long weekend or holiday to start developing your new look.

Once you've achieved the fullness you're after, maintain your new look with a facial hair trimmer. Choose one that comes with a beard attachment that lets you choose the exact length of your beard.

If you find that growing a beard gives you an itchy, red or scaly rash, try washing it with a little dandruff shampoo three times a week. Facial hair is often stiff at first, but should soften up over time.

Did you know?

One of the best places to shave is in the shower! The steam from the hot water will help to open your pores, soften your hair and allow you to get a closer shave.

Smooth operator

When you're done shaving, avoid using alcohol-based products on your face as they'll dry your skin out. Instead, apply a moisturising after-shave treatment product. It'll help to soothe the skin and minimise any irritation and redness.
