Christmas with the Bala family

ClubCard magazine cover stars Loyiso Bala and his wife Jennifer share their gifting philosophy and Christmas traditions.

What a glamorous couple Loyiso and Jen Bala make. The SAMA-winning singer and his gorgeous wife, who is also his manager, have jam-packed schedules but still carve out time to turn Christmas into a festive family affair. “In South Africa, we don't have a day dedicated to Thanksgiving, so we celebrate Christmas in the spirit of Thanksgiving with gifts, a special meal and in song,” says Jen. They’re connected in every way: husband and wife, artist and manager, parents to beautiful Kenzie, and totally in sync when it comes to gift giving. Well… almost.

Gifting gone wrong

“I wanted to surprise Jennifer on her birthday with a new iPad but when I got to the shop to pick it up, it wasn't ready. So in the meantime, I went and bought a random book from the nearby bookstore instead. I got a mild thank you (for the thought) and to this day she, understandably, still hasn't started reading it,” Loyiso admits.*

Jen prides herself on being an excellent gift-giver. When we quizzed her on the worst gift she’s given, she politely said: “I usually put a lot of thought into my gifts to Loyiso, so I have to pass on this one, sorry.”

Home for the holidays

Just like the Bing Crosby classic, Loyiso always makes sure he’s home for Christmas.

“I have watched those movies where the dad or husband works over Christmas and I've said to myself that I will never be that miserable guy,” he says.

20-month old Kenzie has just made their Christmas gatherings that much sweeter. Jen explains: “So far we've only had one Christmas with Kenzie and it was a huge family affair so it certainly didn't feel like the three of us. We've always hosted friends and family in previous years as well, so it hasn't changed all that much except that we have an even bigger family now.”

Christmas with the Balas sounds like a glorious affair filled with gratitude, good food, and of course, love.
