How to wear the red eye make-up trend

We show you how to wear one of this year's hottest runway trends - red eye make-up. Hint: It's easier than you think!

For years we’ve been told to avoid red eye make-up or end up looking tired, as though you’ve been crying or simply in need of an antihistamine. But, what if a scarlet-bedecked eye could make you look super stylish instead? According to make-up artist Tamryn Jefferies, if you choose cleverly, you can totally pull off this year’s risky, yet blazing hot red eye make-up trend.

The easiest approach: Statement eyeliner

The easiest way to rock red eye make-up is to make it very obvious that you’re wearing a look as opposed to fighting allergies. This is simple to achieve with a striking slick of red liner, provided you make it dramatic. “Grab a red liquid liner and draw on a dramatic wing,” says Jefferies. “When you’re wearing such a bold line, you don’t need to apply shadow. Just finish up with two coats of jet black mascara or, if you’re feeling particularly bold, add a pair of voluminous falsies.”

Make a statement with eyeshadow

If you’re wanting to experiment with a bit of red eye shadow, Jefferies suggests you create a smoky eye the way you normally would, using either bronze or pewter-toned shadow. “When you’re done, dip into a highly pigmented red shadow so that it really shows up on top of your other shades and pop it into the outer corner of your lid,” she says. “Use a bullet-shaped brush so you can blend it up and outwards.”

If you’re craving more scarlet, Jefferies says you can use a red shadow on its own to create a wash over your entire lid. “A shimmering shade that’s more on the burgundy side of things will suit all skin tones,” she says. Just, whatever you do, don’t team any red eye shadow look, be it liner or shadow, with scarlet lips. “When you’re wearing such a bold colour on your lids that should take centre stage, so keep your lips neutral and let your eye do the talking.”
