The hottest new make-up technique: Strobing

Strobing is the new kid on the make-up block. It creates a dewy, fresh face with a youthful radiance.

Strobing – dubbed the “new” contouring – is a make-up technique that emphasises the areas on your face that light is most likely to hit, to flattering effect. Whereas contouring uses both lighter and darker skin tone shades to enhance the contours of your face and add depth and definition, strobing uses only lighter shades.

Let your light shine

Popularised by celebrities such as Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian, strobing is essentially a light-reflecting technique that helps create a natural-looking glow. “This technique focuses more on highlighting the skin, and is best for women who already have facial definition,” says freelance make-up artist BK Dikobe.

Similar to highlighting in that it involves emphasising areas of the face with light, strobing takes light play a step further. By maximising luminosity, strobing creates the kind of radiance that gives the appearance of being lit from within.

How to achieve the strobing effect

To achieve the look you’ll need primer, liquid radiance foundation in golden hues that match your skin tone (if you already have a liquid foundation you can buy liquid illuminiser and add it to your foundation), concealer, bronzer matching your skin tone, and translucent powder.

Here are Dikobe’s 5 steps to strobing like a star:

  • Apply primer.
  • Apply foundation to your face and blend well.
  • Apply concealer and highlight the bridge of your nose, under your eyes and on the Cupid's bow of your upper lip.
  • Set your foundation and highlighter very lightly with a translucent powder.
  • Apply bronzer on the bridge of the nose and on the top of your cheekbones. If you have oily skin, keep the highlighter away from your forehead.

Hot tip

Don’t let the glow stop at your chin, extend it to your upper body by highlighting your collarbones and cleavage too.
