Your ultimate shopping list for your newborn baby

It's easy to get overwhelmed when shopping for baby's arrival. Our list of essentials will make sure you are prepared for anything.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when shopping for baby’s arrival. The choices and products are seemingly endless but, unfortunately, your budget is not.

Stick to this list of essentials - including baby toiletries and bathing essentials - and you can be sure you’ll be prepared for anything.

In the nursery

  • Cot or bassinet
  • Firm, flat mattress (less than two fingers should fit between mattress and crib)
  • 1-3 washable crib mattress pads 
  • 2 cot sheets (preferably fitted)
  • Chest of drawers
  • 4–5 receiving blankets
  • Baby monitor
  • Nightlight
  • High chair
  • Rocking or armchair (not essential, but nice to have)

Baby clothes

  • 4-8 babygros (wide head openings and loose legs; mix of short and long sleeves)
  • 4-6 vests or body suits (snaps at neck and under crotch; mix of short and long sleeves)
  • 4-8 one-piece stretchy sleepers with zippers
  • 2 two-piece sets (tops and leggings)
  • 2 jerseys or jackets (front buttoned)
  • No-scratch mittens
  • Bibs
  • Sun hat
  • Knit cap
  • 4-7 pairs of socks or booties
  • 1-3 dress-up outfits
  • Fleece suit for winter

For feeding baby

  • 8 bibs
  • Burp cloths
  • 2-4 pacifiers

For breast-feeding

  • Breast pump
  • Milk storage containers
  • Nursing pillow
  • Nursing bras (buy one cup size larger than your pregnant bra size)
  • Breast pads* (disposable or washable)
  • Nipple cream*


  • Diaper pail
  • Changing pad
  • Baby ointment to prevent rash*
  • Disposable wipes or washcloths for cleaning baby’s bottom*
  • If using disposable diapers:
  • Two boxes of newborn-size diapers* (don’t buy too many in advance in case baby grows quickly)

If using towelling nappies:

  • 30 towelling nappies
  • 6-8 waterproof nappy covers
  • Snaps or safety pins to secure nappies
  • Nappy steriliser*
  • Nappy liners*

Baby bathing basics

  • Baby bath or bath seat
  • 2 washcloths, not used on baby’s bottom (tip: buy different patterns for changing and bathing)
  • Talc*
  • Soft-bristled hairbrush
  • Surgical spirits (to take care of baby’s cord)
  • Nail scissors with rounded tips
  • 2 soft towels or hooded baby towels
  • Aqueous cream*
  • Soap or cleanser*
  • Shampoo specially formulated for babies*
  • Baby oil or moisturising lotion*
  • Cottonwool*
