Survive the slump

Afternoon comes and productivity levels drop. Here’s how to make it through the day.

Just a few tweaks to your daily routine can take you from super-slump to superhero!

Easy ways to up your energy levels

1. Pay attention to your plate

Start your day with a good breakfast and opt for protein over carbs for lunchtime. Make a weekly shopping list so your fridge is stocked with fresh ingredients, and plan your work lunches to include a variety of meal options throughout the week. If you’re not rushed, pack your lunch the night before (we know how easy it is to opt for junk food instead!) and keep your blood sugar levels consistent by munching on healthy snacks throughout the day.

2. Hydration is your hero

The easiest way to stay hydrated? Keep a water bottle at your desk and set yourself the goal of drinking one bottle per hour while you’re at work (and you’ll have your eight glasses down by 5pm!). After a while you’ll start reaching for a sip without even knowing it. When 4pm comes, make yourself a cup of herbal tea for an extra boost.

3. Schedule regular breaks

Being chained to your desk might be the reason you’re feeling uninspired. Take a few minutes throughout the day to go for a walk outside, do light hand and arm stretches and eye exercises at your desk and call your partner or a friend for a quick chat.

4. Plan like a pro

Schedule your least favourite tasks for the morning so you have something to look forward to in the afternoon. When you’re feeling less productive, stay busy by clearing your desk or emptying your inbox – small tasks like these leave your to-do list feeling lighter without taking too much energy.

Saving group work and more interactive tasks for after lunch is also an effective way of sidestepping that lethargic feel towards the end of
the day.

Spot the slump

How do you know if you’re a victim? Here are easy-to-spot signs – it’s 4pm and you’re:

  • Feeling lethargic
  • Yawning nonstop
  • Unable to concentrate
  • In a bad mood for no reason
  • Sure a headache is on its way
  • Are craving sugar
