Tips on looking after your child who has the flu

The flu is a very contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract relating to the throat, nose and lungs. When having the flu, your little one can feel ill for up to a week, and often doctors will prescribe an antibiotic to assist in fighting the virus.

What to do:

Rest up

Plenty of rest is certainly on the cards to get your little one’s body back to normal functioning. Even little ones get overwhelmed and require rest from time to time. A good time out to relax and unwind is just what the body needs to recoup.

Stay hydrated

Drink lots of water. Getting enough liquids is a great priority. Often, with the flu, the body is dehydrated and requires extra liquids to replenish it. To make it exciting, and easier for kids to get in the hydration they need, try making ice pops with water or juice, or blend some fruits to create a yummy smoothie.

Stay indoors

Keep them home and avoid crowded spaces. It’s always a good idea to keep your child home should they be feeling unwell. This will alleviate the spread of the virus to other kids and teachers, as well as external family members and friends, when you avoid social gatherings. Only send them out once they feel better and are they are fever-free for at least 24 hours.

Keep healthy

Stock up on vitamins and supplements for the rest of the family. A low immune system makes the family more susceptible to infection. Be sure to keep other members well by strengthening their immune systems and keeping them hydrated to avoid infection.

Watch for warning signs

Keep an eye on them and watch for warning signals. This is a very important step in ensuring your child’s illness doesn’t progress to dangerous levels. Watch for a fever and if it lasts for more than 72 hours, or more than 24 hours if your child is under two years of age, take them to the hospital immediately.
