Detailed Description:
Scheduling status: S1.Proprietary name (and dosage form):Terbinafine hydrochloride Lamisil® 1% cream.Composition:Each 1 g cream contains 10 mg terbinafine hydrochloride and 1.0% m/m benzyl alcohol as preservative.Pharmacological classification:A. 20.2.2 antimicrobial (chemotherapeutic) agents. At low concentrations, terbinafine is fungicidal against dermatophytes, moulds and certain dimorphic fungi. The activity against yeasts is fungicidal or fungistatic, depending on the species.Terbinafine interferes specifically with fungal sterol biosynthesis at an early step. This leads to a deficiency in ergosterol and to an intracellular accumulation of squalene, resulting in cell death. Terbinafine acts by inhibition of squalene epoxidase in the fungal cell membrane. The enzyme squalene epoxidase is not linked to the cytochrome P-450 system.Pharmacokinetic properties:Less than 5% of the dose is absorbed after topical application to humans.Indications:Adults and children over the age of 12 years:Fungal infections of the skin caused by dermatophytes such as trichophyton (eg. T. rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, T. verrucosum, T. violaceum) and Epidermophyton floccosum.Yeast infections of the skin, principally those caused by candida albicans.Pityriasis (tines) versicolor due to Pityrosporum orbiculare (also known as Malassezia furfur).Identification:A white, smooth or almost smooth, glossy cream.Presentation:7.5 g and 15 g aluminium tubes with polypropylene caps.Date of publication of this package insert:29 November 1996.®Registered trademark. For the treatment of fungal infections such as athlete's foot, jock (dhobie) itch and body ringworm.Broad-spectrum antifungal agent.Novartis.
