Scheduling status: S2.Proprietary name (and dosage form):Merthiolate (tincture).Composition:Each 100 ml Merthiolate contains:Acetone - 10 ml.Alcohol 95% - 52.8 ml.Monoethanolamine - 100 mg.Ethylenediamine - 20 mg.Sodium edetate - 200 mg.Thimerosal - 100 mg.Coloured aqueous vehicle to - 100 ml.Pharmacological classification:A 13.1 antiseptics, disinfectants, cleansing agents.Pharmacological action:Merthiolate is a superior organomercurial antiseptic with long-recognized usefulness in most areas of medicine. It provides sustained activity against all common pathogens (bacteria and fungi), is relatively non-toxic and non-irritating to body tissues and maintains activity in high dilution. It is readily soluble in water and is miscible with soap and alcohol. Unlike many other antiseptics, Merthiolate is not inactivated by soaps, cotton materials or body lipids and proteins. All antiseptics have antagonists that nullify their action. In the case of mercurial antiseptics, these are the free, active sulphhydryl groups. Their chief source under the artificial conditions of the test tube is thioglycolic acid. In the body, glutathione of the red blood cells has a similar action. Thus, Merthiolate, like other antiseptics, is antagonized by whole blood. However, since the action of Merthiolate in contrast to that of other antiseptics, is not significantly diminished by plasma, serum or body fluids in general, it remains effective in the presence of non-sanguineous drainage or discharge.Merthiolate may also serve as a preservative for serums, antigens, vaccines, arterial graft, bone, cartilage, antibiotic preparations and other biologica! and pharmaceutical products.Indications:For antisepsis of the skin prior to surgery and for first-aid treatment of contaminated wounds. Has been used as an antifungal agent in athlete's foot infection.Treatment: supportive therapy.Identification:Merthiolate tincture is a fluorescent orange to pink tincture with a strong alcoholic odour.Presentation:Merthiolate tincture is supplied in bottles containing 30 ml and 2.5 l. The 30 ml bottle is equipped with a spray unit.

Works a treat on burns, cuts and grazes. Looks hectic but nothing on the market is as fast and effective as this little chappie. I screw the lid off and place a drop on cuts. It marks anything it touches till dry but worth it for its effectiveness.
