Harry Styles, Jared Leto, Brad Pitt. In the media, these are three men who have the most enviable hair. And it’s not about the colour or the length – it’s all about the volume. Now, while not every man has naturally voluminous, wind-blown hair, there are some simple ways you can fake fuller hair in minutes. For some tips on how to do it, we asked the advice of Eric Way Lovemore, the award-winning co-founder of Groomed Academy and the owner of Groomed Men.

How to handle a hairdryer

Let’s start with a go-to styling tool that does the job quickly and effectively – a hairdryer. If you have no idea how to use one correctly, Eric says, “Towel dry your hair first and then use a hairdryer on the highest heat and fastest blow-drying setting. Run a vent brush through the hair while blow-drying the hair on the top of the head against the direction of its natural growth. This will change the structure of the hair and give it some oomph. Then, use a lightweight styling aid to get the desired look.”

Skip the comb

A number of hairstylists advise men with thinner hair to ditch combs and harsh brushes and use their fingers to style their hair. All you need is a good run-through with your fingers to freshen up your style and show gravity who’s boss. “Finger styling is a more effective manner to style the hair when it is thin. It allows the hair to fall more naturally,” Eric says.

What about dry shampoo?

Another quick way to fake fuller hair is to use a dry shampoo. This will keep your hair squeaky clean without weighing it down. “Dry shampoo can be very effective for creating volume, but it cannot be used on an ongoing basis as it can cause a powder build-up on the hair shaft,” Eric advises. “At some point, it needs to be removed with water.”

Extra texture

“There are many different products on the market that can help to enhance the appearance and texture of the hair, making it look thicker. A volumising shampoo, for example, can work on hair that has the right density. My favourite trick is to use sea salt spray on damp hair. After drying, it leaves the hair looking thick and healthy,” says Eric.
