Spring has made its long-awaited debut, and your house isn’t the only thing that can benefit from some major cleaning. As you pack away your winter clothes and swap out your fluffy sheets for lightweight ones, you should also update your spring hair care routine.

It’s the perfect time to wash away the harsh, dry effects of winter, and rejuvenate your routine for warmer weather ahead.

Switch your shampoo and conditioner

Now that the freezing cold has passed, your hair isn’t losing moisture the way it does mid-winter and the moisturising shampoo and/or conditioner (often filled with rich and nourishing ingredients) you’ve been using might be too heavy for your hair. Consider switching to more lightweight, hydrating formulas which can cleanse the scalp while keeping hair moisturised. Also consider your hair's texture when choosing a shampoo, and not your hair’s condition - look for products targeted to your hair type such as straight, wavy, fine, curly, thick, etc.

Give your scalp some love

Spring is the perfect season to switch your focus toward renewing and maintaining your scalp health, which is vital for healthy hair growth. The use of heavier products during the winter months can lead to product build-up on your scalp which can lead to hair loss through clogged pores. That’s why incorporating a scalp treatment such as a scalp cleanser or scrub once or twice a week into your post-winter routine is a good idea.

Clean up

Just like the dirt and build-up left on makeup brushes can cause havoc with our skin, so can your hair tools. Hair, dead skin cells, styling products and oil can all build up in your brushes and combs, creating the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. First remove any clumps of clinging hair, then soak them in water with a blob of shampoo mixed in. Give them a rinse and allow them air-dry. and then give them a rinse. Styling tools such as curlers, straighteners or wands can suffer from the same build-up as your hairbrushes but avoid using harsh cleaning agents and scourers - a wipe down with a damp soft cloth should be sufficient. For your hair dryer, simply clean out the filter on the back to lengthen its lifespan.

Try a new hue

Whether you opt for a completely new hair colour or decide on partial highlights; spring is the perfect time to give your locks a new look. Just ensure you invest in a hair care routine geared to protecting and hydrating your tresses while maintaining your colour.

Time to gloss

The gloomy weather and the cold air combined with the heating indoors can leave you hair looking dry and lacklustre. A gloss serum or treatment might just be what your hair needs to give an extra boost of shine. But the benefits don’t stop there, gloss treatments are often packed with nourishing and strengthening ingredients which enhances the overall health and softness of your hair.

Mask regularly

To ensure your hair is strong enough to survive the summer, it’s vital to prep hair with extra nourishment in spring. Applying a hair mask once a week will not only provide the hair and scalp with extra moisture but be able to keep frizz at bay when the high temperatures hit. Unlike instant conditioners that only stay on your hair for a few minutes, hair masks remain on your hair for at least 20 minutes or you can apply it while you are in the shower, popping a shower cap over the treatment - the heat and steam will make the treatment more intense.
