Scheduling status: Proprietary name (and dosage form): Ferofol (capsules). Ferofol (syrup). Composition: Each capsule contains: Iron (III) hydroxide polymaltose complex. Equivalent to elemental iron - 24mg. Folic Acid BP - 500mcg. Cyanocobalamin BP - 2.6mcg. Each 5 ml contains: Iron (III) hydroxide polymaltose complex. Equivalent to elemental iron - 24mg. Folic Acid BP - 500mcg. Cyanocobalamin BP - 2.6mcg. Syrup base - q.s. Sugar - 2.5g. Preservative: mthyl hydroxybenzoate 0.19% w/v, propyl hydroxybenzoate 0.02% w/v, amino benzoic acid 0.01% w/v & bronopol 0.01% w/v. Pharmacological classification: D 8.6 erythropoietks (haematinic). Pharmacological action: Iron (III) hydroxide polymaltose complex is a water soluble, macromolecular complex of polynuclear iron (III) hydroxide and partially hydrolyzed dextrin (polymaltose). The stable structure of iron III hydroxide polymaltose ensure's controlled release of iron, thereby reducing gastrointestinal side effects and produces an effective increase in haemoglobin resulting in formation and maintenance of healthy red blood cell. Iron is also necessary for the transport of oxygen throughout the body. Folic acid is needed for cell division in the generation of red blood cells. Vitamin B12 is needed for the proper functioning of folic acid and a deficiency of this vitamin results in the condition pernicious anaemia. Indications: Ferofol capsule /syrup is an iron supplement. Identification: Ferofol capsule: scarlet red capsule. Ferofol syrup: brown syrupy liquid with strawberry odour. Presentation: Ferofol capsules: securitainer containing 30 or 90 capsules. Ferofol syrup: 150 ml syrup in amber glass bottle with a spoon calibrated to measure 5 ml.

How to use

Usage instructions:
Dosage and directions for use: One capsule or 5 ml (one teaspoon) per day or as directed by your healthcare professional. Shake well before use.

Storage instructions:
Store in a dry and dark place below 30 degrees C.

Warnings:
Contra-indications: In cases of iron overload (e.g. haemochromatosis, haemosiderosis) or disturbances in iron utilization (e.g. lead anaemia, sideroacrestic anaemia, thalassaemia) and anaemias not caused by iron deficiency (e.g. haemolytic anaemia). Warnings and special precautions: As with all iron preparations, a dark coloration of the stool may occur this is without clinical significance. Always tell your healthcare professional if you are taking any other medicine. If you are pregnant or breast feeding your baby please consult your doctor, pharmacist or other healthcare professional for advice before taking this medicine. Drug interactions: No interactions have been observed. Since, the iron is complex bound, ionic interaction with foodstuff components (phytates, oxalates, tannin, etc.) and concomitant administrations of medicaments (tetracyclines, antacids) are unlikely to occur. Pregnancy & lacatation: Reproduction studies in animals did not show any foetal risk. Controlled studies in pregnant women after the first trimester have not shown any undesirable effects on mother and neonates. There is no evidence of a risk during the first trimester and the possibility of a negative influence to the foetus is unlikely to occur. Mother's milk contains iron bound to lactoferrin. It is not known how much iron from the complex is passed into mother's milk. The administration of Ferofol capsule/ Ferofol syrup is unlikely to cause undesirable effects to the nursed child. During pregnancy and lactation Ferofol capsule/ Ferofol syrup should be used on prescription. Side-effects: Iron administration orally may cause gastric disturbances and abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, constipation and may cause black stools. Not all side effects reported for this medicine are included in this leaflet. Should your general health worsen or should you experience any untoward effects while taking this medicine, please consult your doctor, pharmacist or health care professional. Known symptoms of overdosage and particulars of its treatment: See side-effects and special precautions: In the treatment of acute iron poisoning priority is given to preventing further iron absorption from the gastro-intestinal tract. Emesis or lavage should be considered and serum-iron concentration should be monitored to estimate severity of poisoning.
