5 Easy hairstyles that never go out of fashion

25 March 2024 | By Leila Petersen

Looking for new hair style? How about a classic? We’ve picked five styles that have stood the test of time.

While some beauty gurus might pride themselves on being ahead of the curve when it comes to the latest trends, there's something to be said for embracing the classics. Whether you’re looking for something long and layered, or short and sweet, these timeless styles will see you through today and beyond.

1. The classic bob

Made famous by celebs like Anna Wintour and Alexa Chung, the bob is one of the most iconic and enduring hairstyles. This timeless look has been a firm favourite for decades thanks to its simplicity, versatility, and flattering nature, and with each passing year, it continues to evolve and adapt to the latest trends. There are many variations, so you can customise the bob cut to suit your face shape, hair texture, and length – whether it's chin-length, below the chin, or grazing the ears. When it comes to maintenance, this style does require a bit of upkeep, as you'll need to get your hair trimmed every four to six weeks,

2. Box braids

When you talk about standing the test of time, box braids are a clear winner – this style dates back more than 300 years! Worn by celebrities like Rihanna, Tessa Thompson and Beyonce, box braids never seem to out of style. The most well-known of protective styles, box braids are usually three stranded braids that aren't braided flat against your head – hair is sectioned off into squares or boxes and gets braided down to the ends. They can be worn with or without extensions, which means you can play with length and styles.

3. The ponytail

Ponytails will be forever trending, especially as they so often save the day when you wake up feeling exhausted, or you’ve overslept. All you need is a brush and a hair tie, and you’ll literally be done within minutes. Whether you prefer a high or low pony, messy or sleek, understated, or bold, the style can be adjusted to suit any occasion. The latest ponytail trend sees major celebs accessorising their ponies with bows, statement hairpins, pearls, and more.

4. The pixie

Another timeless hairstyle that has been embraced by countless fashion icons and celebrities, the pixie is perfect for those seeking a chic and low-maintenance look. While in general it refers to a style that is short on the sides and back and slightly longer on top - usually with short, wispy bangs styled to the side - it can also be customised to be shaped and framed to suit different face shapes, hair types and textures. What’s best about this haircut is that it won’t take too much of your time. It’s short, simple to wash, easy to style, and quick to dry.

5. The shag

Year after year the shag keeps making a comeback, and now it’s stronger than ever. One of the most flattering styles, this trending hairstyle has been able to withstand the test of time, mostly because it's low maintenance and versatile. It works for different ages and face shapes, as well as various hair lengths, types, and colours. Characterised by its choppy layers and plenty of texture, this multi-layered style can be customised to perfectly frame your face and highlight your facial features.

While a classic or true shag usually features bangs, a centre part, and lots of volume on top, there are new versions cropping up every season. From the wolf cut shag (the perfect mix of the shag and the mullet) to the curly shag, to a voluminous shag, there are myriad ways to wear this style. As this look is all about volume and creating a tousled effect for those with wavy hair, applying a sea salt spray enhances the natural texture. For thin hair apply a volumising mousse to add volume and minimise frizz. For curly shags, use a styling cream to define the layers of a choppy shag and if you have naturally thick hair, spritz a texturizing spray, and run your fingers through your locks.
