Which mascara is best for you?

25 March 2024 | By Leila Petersen

Whether you’re looking to curl, lift or create fuller-looking lashes, we'll help you find which mascara is best for you.

Makeup can seem complicated, but sometimes the simplest products can have the most impact. Case in point: mascara. With just a few coats of this beauty staple, you have the power to change your entire look. Whether you want to brighten tired eyes, feel put together (and don't have much time), or enhance a glamourous eye makeup look – the right mascara can do it all. However, not all mascaras are designed to achieve the same look; understanding the different types of mascara - including lengthening, volumising, curling, and waterproof formulas - is key. Which wand is best for you?

Lash-lengthening mascara: Best for those with short or sparse eyelashes

For long, dramatic lashes, turn to a fibre mascara. Made with rayon or nylon fibres, when mascara is applied, these fibres bind to the tips of the eyelashes, making them appear longer. Most lengthening mascaras also feature denser bristles, which allow the mascara to get onto the lashes, especially on the tips.

Volumising mascara: Best for those with thin or sparse eyelashes

To achieve thick and full-looking lashes turn to volumising mascaras that can thicken the look of your lash line. Featuring silicones, polymers, and waxes, these formulas add plumpness to the circumference of your eyelashes by bulking up the lash hairs which gives lashes some mega oomph. When it comes to the wand opt for thick and densely bristled shapes, as these will ensure every lash is coated.

Curling mascara: Best for those with straight lashes

For those looking to give their eyelash curler a helping hand, then look no further than curling mascaras. Featuring a type of polymer that lifts your eyelashes by contracting when applied, curling mascaras don’t weigh your lashes down, but rather make your eyelashes curl upward, making them appear longer and more volumised. They also often have curved wands which work to lift your lashes from the root to create the perfect curl that can hold all day.

Waterproof/smudge-proof mascara: Best for those who want long-lasting lashes

Whether you are planning a day of swimming, hitting the gym, or just need your lashes to stay intact (and avoid the dreaded panda-eye look), waterproof mascara is for you. Made with a blend of waxes and silicones for product adhesion, waterproof mascara doesn't break down easily when exposed to water. But there’s one caveat: it may be more difficult to remove compared to other mascaras. So use an oil cleanser or oil-based eye makeup remover. Just remember to be gentle when taking it off, so you don't cause irritation to the eye area or pull on your lashes.
