Being prepared for consultations with your paediatrician will help you to get the most out of these visits.

Access to the services of a child specialist or paediatrician is important to optimise the healthcare of a child from birth. Ideally, all children should be checked at birth, and then again at six weeks, four months, six months, nine months , and then at one year. From one year, routine visits are less frequent and should happen every four to six months.

At each visit, the important issues of that particular age are discussed. Common to all visits is a review of the growth and development of the child, and an analysis of the nutritional status of the child. The general review includes a check of the child’s heart, lungs, abdomen and neurological system, and a check of the eyes, ears, nose and throat. This is often done as part of the general examination of the child.

Bring the primary caregiver

In order to maximise the benefit to the child, it is helpful if parents and caregivers are present for the visit. If, for example, the grandmother looks after the child every day and is responsible for feeding and general childcare while the parents are at work, it is recommended that the grandmother also attends the consultation.

Seek to understand

Visits often centre around acute complaints. Parents should always discuss the management options with their doctor. If an antibiotic is prescribed, ask why it is recommended and what the potential side effects could be. Most specialists do not recommend antibiotics easily as their inappropriate use can cause problems, especially at a community level. It is important for parents to understand the reason the various medicines are prescribed as well as their correct dosage and length of treatment.

Make a list

Childhood is a dynamic period during which each age presents its own unique set of challenges. Parents are often concerned about what may appear to be minor problems. It is far better to rather discuss these even if they may seem ridiculous. In fact I often tell parents to make a list of all their concerns so we can make sure we deal with them all during the consultation. Understanding what is normal is often the answer to many queries.

Psychological issues can mask medical complaints, and sometimes look very similar. These issues should also be raised and discussed with the paediatrician during the visit. And don’t forget to always bring the Road to Health booklet with so the growth trajectory of your child can be assessed.

For first-time parents in particular, looking after a child can be quite a challenge. Ask your paediatrician about the steps you should take should there be a problem after hours, and ensure you have the necessary emergency services numbers on your phone. It also useful to keep certain basic medicines at home, such as suppositories for fever. You can obtain these over the counter at Clicks pharmacies. Always follow the dosage instructions carefully to ensure you are administering the appropriate dose for your child’s age.
