Everything you need to pack in your child's bag for crèche
Not sure what you should be packing inside your little one’s bag for crèche? Relax – it’s not all that different from the essentials you’d usually take with for a day’s outing.
Chances are you have a fall back habit of checking that you have all your basics in place every time you change your handbag: wallet, phone, keys and a spare mask. Packing a bag for creche is no more complicated, really, and you can remove most of the stress by checking that everything your child might need has already been packed the night before, avoiding that last minute “oh-my-gosh-we-nearly-forgot” stress in the morning.
So, what exactly should be going in that bag? Anja Fockema, owner and principal and Hug Bug Playschool in Johannesburg, says that these are the must-haves:
A change of clothes
This is perhaps the most important item, since most creches encourage kids to get involved with messy play or water play at some stage – and, even if they don’t, there’s always a chance of toilet accidents. Remember to pack not only an extra pair of seasonal clothes, but a spare T-shirt in case it gets warm or an extra cardigan or sweatshirt, as weather is often unpredictable.
A sun hat
This one is obvious, given the strength of the South African sun, and many playschools have a “no hat, no play” policy in place. It’s a good idea to bolster sun protection by packing a bottle of sunscreen, too.
Anything you might need for nappy changes
Anja says that she prefers parents to supply a full packet of nappies at the beginning of each term, which can be replenished as necessary, but you can never go wrong by sending alone some extra nappies, just in case. Bum cream and wipes are good, too – and, if your child is busy toilet training, a plastic bag for soiled clothes is a must.
A healthy snack
Pack a little bit more than you think your child might need, because you’d be surprised at how hungry they get. Anja says it’s best to avoid packing sweets and treats as they are almost always likely to cause jealousy amongst those who don’t have. Also, choose water over juice, because it’s tops for hydration and all that play builds up a real thirst. Don’t worry that they’ll resist the water – Anja says that once they see their little friends drinking up, they’ll be happy to do the same.
Medication
This also includs any medicinal creams or ointments they may need.
