Fun ideas for a third birthday party

14 May 2020 | By Anna-Bet Stemmet

Turning three is a huge event for any toddler – it’s one of the first birthday parties they can actively look forward to, after all! Here are a few ideas for a fun (and low-impact) celebration for your 3-year-old.

Go fresh and friendly with the food

Lisa Rae Burch is a natural living influencer, and mother to two boisterous boys, Remo Ray and Hunter Reign, ages 5 and 2, respectively. She recommends choosing foods that are colourful and tasty, but low in refined carbs and sugars so you can skip the inevitable sugar rush meltdowns.

“I normally go with watermelon slices on ice cream sticks, rainbow fruit kebabs, home-made popcorn and sweet potato chips. Freshly made fruit juices and home-made ice teas feature as well, and my all-time favourite party food is frozen yoghurt cups with ice cream sticks in it. You literally just buy those six-packs of yoghurt, peel off the tops and pop it in the freezer with the sticks inside. If you use plain, sugar-free yoghurt you can add some honey or fruit juice for flavour. My kids also adore hotdogs, so we use vegan sausages that taste like the real deal and make sure that there is plenty of tomato sauce (and jammerlappies) to go around,” she explains.

Create a welcoming, waste-free space

“If you have a park near your house, see if you can host a party there. It's free, kids love the space and there is plenty of room for play on jungle gyms, etc. You can even hide some dinosaur keepsakes in the sandpit and organise an ‘excavation’ if you’re feeling particularly inventive,” suggests Lisa.

“I have a box of decoration elements that I am able to reuse for each party. This includes material bunting in various colours, a happy birthday banner, etc. I limit myself to one larger foil balloon per birthday since it's so bad for the environment - but my boys love them, so I compromise. The foil balloons can be refilled and reused for future events. I keep the weights for the balloons in my decor box as well.”

Lisa’s Top Tip: “Decorate the birthday cake with toys that your child can take home afterwards. I’ve done this successfully with plastic dinosaurs and toy cars in the past, and those toys are still in rotation.”

Don't stress yourself out about activities

“In terms of activities, I actually prefer just to let the kids be. I believe that free, independent play is vital for healthy childhood development, so I hardly plan any activities for my kids' birthday parties. As such, my focus is more on finding a nice, fun space for my boys to enjoy the day with their friends,” says Lisa.
