The first 12 weeks of pregnancy can be a whirlwind of emotion as you process the news and try to keep yourself healthy for the sake of your baby. Parents-to-be are exposed to so much advice – it’s not always easy to know what’s best for you and your baby early on in your pregnancy.

Here, Dr Palesa Kennedy, a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist in Hermanus, talks us through some of the dos and don’ts for your first trimester.

Do talk to the professionals

You probably can’t wait for that first doctor’s appointment to confirm your pregnancy. And after that, sticking to your prenatal appointments and follow-ups is non-negotiable. “Prenatal care is essential for monitoring your baby’s health and addressing any concerns early on,” says Dr Kennedy.

Do think about your diet

Dr Kennedy says that pregnant women should ensure they’re consuming healthy foods: lean proteins, fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains and dairy products. Each of these foods play an important role in your health and your developing baby’s health. “Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated, and to support proper circulation, digestion and overall health,” she adds.

If morning sickness is affecting your appetite, try eating smaller meals more frequently, rather than large meals. “This can help manage nausea and prevent an empty stomach, which can worsen symptoms,” says Dr Kennedy. She adds that sipping water slowly through the day could be helpful, as can eating foods rich in ginger as it contains anti-inflammatory properties that can help alleviate nausea.

Don’t eat fish that’s high in mercury

“Fish with high mercury content could damage your baby’s developing brain and nervous system,” says Dr Kennedy. She warns against the following: sushi, sashimi, raw oysters, clams or scallops, ceviche and large predatory fish, like swordfish, king mackerel and shark.

Do keep moving

Of course, it’s important to be careful in whatever you do during pregnancy, but it is ok to exercise (unless your doctor says otherwise). “Stay active with exercises suitable for pregnancy, such as walking, swimming, prenatal yoga or low-impact aerobics,” says Dr Kennedy.

Don’t forget to rest

It may seem like there’s a whole lot more on your to-do list now that you’re expecting to welcome a new life into the world but try not to overexert yourself. “Listen to your body’s cues and prioritise adequate rest and sleep,” advises Dr Kennedy.

Do manage your stress

Feeling anxious or stressed is normal during pregnancy, but finding healthy ways to manage it is essential in the first trimester. There are many relaxation techniques and deep breathing exercises suitable for pregnancy. If you are struggling to cope emotionally, speak to a healthcare professional.

Don’t use harmful substances

“Say no to alcohol, smoking and illicit drugs as they can harm your baby’s development,” says Dr Kennedy. Seek urgent healthcare advice if you’re struggling to do so. Dr Kennedy adds that pregnant women should limit their caffeine intake and ask their doctor about medications they are currently taking to ensure they are safe to use in the first trimester.

Do pay attention to product ingredients

When it comes to skincare, haircare and beauty products, research the ingredients that are unsafe during pregnancy, such as retinoids and high-dose salicylic acid. Some may be harmful during pregnancy if they can absorb into the bloodstream and affect your developing baby. If you’re unsure, seek advice from your doctor or dermatologist.
