How to choose the right nappy for your baby
Little ones come in all shapes and sizes, and because they grow fast, choosing the right nappy for your baby can be tricky.
The primary goal of a nappy is to keep your baby’s bottom dry, and one of the most obvious signs that a nappy is undersized is when your little one is constantly leaking. As nappies are sized using weight, make sure you have regular weigh-ins.
How to choose the right size
Many moms have shopped around extensively before finding a nappy that works for their little one. The first factor that can affect how a nappy fits and absorbs is, unsurprisingly, size. Nappies are sized according to a baby’s weight but the weight classes often overlap from size to size.
Firstly, choose the size closest to what your baby weighs at the moment. Then, check the fit around your baby’s leg; it should be snug but not tight. If it’s tight, go up a size. Also, leaking nappies could indicate that you need to go up or down by a size. Every baby has their own unique build and proportion, so it is a bit of trial and error to find the right fit.
Choosing your nappy type
The sheer variety of nappies available today can be overwhelming, as the market is no longer dominated by traditional players. Modern cloth nappies, which are reusable, better for the environment and cheaper in the long term, have gained popularity.
They come in different types, including all-in-nnes, all-in-twos and pocket nappies. There are also different types of inserts, made from cotton, hemp or bamboo, which absorb fluids and help to keep your baby dry.
According to the South African Cloth Nappy Users website, a cloth nappy should fit slightly different to a disposable – low at the back and with the front of the nappy all the way over baby's tummy. The nappy should fit snuggly around the waist and legs, without being too tight. If you cannot run your finger between the nappy and your baby’s leg, you may want to adjust the nappy to increase its size.
The Clicks Made 4 Baby Dryprotect range of disposable nappies feature an improved design, and start at size 1 – 2, for newborns weighing 2-5kg and goes up to size 6 x-large, for babies weighing more than 13kg. These nappies have a wetness applicator and stretchy waistband for comfort.
When it comes to deciding between brands, or between disposable nappies and cloth, as with the rest of child-rearing, the choice is yours. Shop around and see what works best for you and your baby. Don’t forget to keep your receipt, as most shops will exchange unopened packs of nappies should you need to change the size.
