Flat irons and curlers. Sculptors and rollers. Diffusers and silk scarves. The list of hair tools you’ll see on the shelves, goes on and on. We asked Jenni Smit, pro hairstylist at Scar hair salon for her tips on how to choose your most important hair tools.

Invest in a high-performance hairdryer

“When choosing a hairdryer, think about your hair type. If you want to achieve a smooth look and you have coarse, curly hair, you need a professional hairdryer. And if you have fine hair that is naturally straighter, you won't need a very strong hairdryer. I would suggest asking your stylist for advice on what would work for your hair, because the one-size-fits-all rule just doesn’t apply to hair tools,” said Jenni.

A good hairbrush is your BFF

As Jenni explained, “Brushing your hair stimulates blood flow to the scalp, improving growth and strengthening your hair follicles and scalp environment. I suggest a good detangler brush for long hair, a good paddle brush for shorter hair, and definitely a quality, salon blow-wave brush for styling.”

Slay your style with a straightener

“I would always recommend a professional thermal styler because the technology used to manufacture them helps to prevent damage. And remember, always use professional heat protection before any heat styling (including blow drying),” Jenni advised.

Scalp massagers for the win

“Stimulating the scalp is very good for hair growth. I have seen first-hand, the amazing effect it had on a young man who was going bald. Blood simulation can help break up the DHT hormone in the follicles that causes balding. And it can be wonderfully therapeutic too.”
