There is a lot that dermatologists and scientists know about hair loss that they didn’t know a few decades ago. For example, we know that male pattern baldness does not only occur in older men. According to the American Hair Loss Association, about 25% of men who are affected by male pattern baldness start to see early symptoms before the age of 21.

Studies have even resulted in the discovery of a “baldness gene.” Researchers from GlaxoSmithKline conducted tests on 1 125 men to test how susceptible they were to hair loss. The results showed that one in seven men are more likely to lose their hair based on the presence of a specific gene.

We called on dermatologist, Dr Nomphelo Gantsho for more information on what causes hair loss and what sufferers of this condition can do about it.

Hereditary hair loss

“Hair loss caused by hereditary alopecia can be treated,” Dr Gantsho explains. “In androgenic alopecia (AGA), hair loss is caused by androgens. Pharmacologic treatment of AGA decreases dihydrotestosterone and stimulates hair follicles through the use of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors or minoxidil. Other therapies include laser therapy, scalp micro-needling, the use of platelet-rich plasma, hair mesotherapy and hair transplantation.”

Hormonal changes

Yes, hair loss can be caused by hormonal changes such as those that occur during pregnancy, childbirth, the discontinuation of birth control pills and menopause. “It’s advisable to go and see a specialist who can do blood tests and correct the abnormal hormones if, in fact, they are correctable,” Dr Gantsho recommends.

Stress

There are varying opinions on whether stress affects hair loss and if so, to what degree. Dr Gantsho explains, “Telogen effluvium is the kind of hair loss that is caused by stress. Many people experience a general thinning of hair several months after a physical or emotional shock. This type of hair loss is temporary.”

Tips for treating and preventing hair loss

Ensure your diet includes protein, iron and nutrients as a lack of these can cause hair loss.

Avoid tight hairstyles, such as braids, buns or ponytails that can damage your hair.

Avoid compulsively twisting, rubbing or pulling your hair.

Treat your hair gently when washing and brushing.

A wide-toothed comb may help prevent you from pulling your hair out or causing breakage.

Avoid medications and supplements that could cause hair loss.
