3 Reasons why you should use a silk bonnet

04 August 2022 | Atlehang Ramathesele

Silk bonnets are trending – and for good reason! We look at the benefits of sleeping in a bonnet, and whether silk or satin is better.

While just the feeling after putting on a soft silk or satin bonnet before you climb into bed is already quite alluring, there are several other compelling reasons why a bonnet should be your best friend.

Suitable for all hair types but especially beneficial if you have curly, natural 4C, afro, coily or textured hair, hair bonnets help lock in moisture, fight frizz and protect your hair - all while you’re getting your beauty sleep. Read on to find out how.

1. Ultra protection

Moving around restlessly in your sleep can lead to tangled and ultimately damaged hair. Putting on a bonnet immediately protects your hair from breakage and knots by forming a softer barrier between your hair and your pillow. Just tuck your hair in the bonnet (light brushing beforehand optional) and enjoy a good night's sleep before waking up to hair that is much easier to manage in the morning.

2. Boost hydration and reduce frizz

No matter how fancy your linen might be, cotton pillowcases and sheets tend to strip the natural moisture from your hair. Bonnets offer a softer lining that can retain moisture throughout the night. It can also help lock in overnight hair treatments and leave-in conditioner without staining your pillowcase.

A bonnet also serves as a great protectant and helps prevent split ends and breakage. Tossing and turning, especially against a cotton pillowcase, leads to friction that makes for a frizzy start to the day.

3. Make that hairstyle last

When you have a new hairstyle like braids or an up-do, bonnets do a great job of protecting them. They give you more volume for elaborate hairdos and curls and help keep them more bouncy, fresh and healthy for longer. Wearing a bonnet will also save you some valuable time in the morning because your hairstyle will require far less fussing.

Silk or satin?

Both these fabrics achieve the same thing as they are kind to your hair. There are, however, many budget-friendly options available that do the job without breaking the bank. When you want to save but still have a bit of a spoil, satin is the way to go as it is considerably more affordable. Silk is a more premium textile so it will cost more, but splurge if you’re in the mood for a little more luxury.
