4 Products that will keep oily skin in check this summer
Struggling to keep an oily T-zone at bay? We have make-up artist and beauty therapist, Jill Swain, to help you in your quest to shun the shine.
Here are four of our favourite tips and products to help keep the shine at bay this summer.
Choose the right cleanser
“One of the biggest misconceptions about having oily skin, is that you should cleanse, cleanse and cleanse again. However, in my experience, harsh, soap-based cleansers often strip the skin of healthy oils and cause your sebaceous glands to go into overdrive. Personally, I prefer gel cleansers when it comes to treating oily skin,” said Jill.
Mask on, mask off
When it comes to keeping your skin looking great in summer when it’s more prone to excess shine, we recommend using a mask at least once a week. But, which ingredients are most useful for oily skin? For Jill, it all comes down to clay: “You can’t go wrong with a clay mask. They’re great at removing dead skin cells and producing a mattifying effect that’s not too harsh on the skin.”
Don’t skimp on moisturiser
Striking the balance between a cleanser that’s moisturising enough to keep skin feeling supple and smooth, and lightweight enough not to clog pores, is the key to dewy summer skin. This is where knowing your ingredients can really make a big difference. “I swear by tea tree oil. It’s a natural miracle-worker when it comes to managing breakouts and it’s also antibacterial and antifungal so it will keep all the nasties out and all the good moisture in. When it comes to a moisturiser, choose one with tea tree oil in it for best results in the warmer months,” said Jill.
Powder up
Here’s one we’re really excited about – powder foundation. It’s a formulation that’s come a long way since its introduction to the market and its one that a few celebrity makeup artists swear by. Jill explains why: “Powder foundation is soft and blendable, whether you’re using a brush or a sponge. Simply pat it on, then smooth over for an even finish. It’s a great mattifier. Then, simply add a dot or two of liquid foundation to the cheeks for a dewy finish. Insta-ready!”
