You’re familiar with a face wash and you know what a moisturiser does, but when it comes to toners, you might draw a blank. Don’t worry, we’re here to help!

What is toner?

Toners are usually the middle child of a typical three-step skincare routine. First you wash, then you tone, and lastly, you moisturise. That’s because toners help to remove impurities from your skin that a wash couldn’t get rid of. Think of it as a product that gently rinses your face and rids it of any remaining traces of dirt, oil and/or make-up.

Why you should use a toner

Because of this rinse effect, using a toner can improve your facial skin’s appearance. The rinse effect is also handy for reducing pores. Visible pores are usually the result of being clogged up; facial cleaning therefore helps to address the build-up, leaving your pores looking smaller and your skin fine and glowing.

Anyone can use a toner; in fact, it’s recommended that everyone does. If your skin tends to be oily, you wear makeup and/or you’re prone to acne flare ups, toner is a must.

When you should use a toner

You should use a toner whenever you wash your face, meaning in the morning and in the evening. The reason for this is that toners help to keep your face hydrated and restore your skin’s pH level after cleaning. Plus, they prep your skin for any additional products you’ll use after the toner.

When using a toner, apply just a few drops to a cotton wool ball or reusable cotton pad and gently swipe your face, neck, and decolletage.

How to choose a toner that’s good for your skin

The main thing when choosing a toner is to avoid one that has drying ingredients such as alcohol, parabens or artificial fragrances. Alcohol-heavy toners were common a few years ago and unfortunately gave this wonder-working product a bad rep due to the dry skin many experienced. Today, toners are often water-based and are packed with the goodness your skin needs to look and feel hydrated, healthy and taken care of.

You also want to try for an option that has minimal to no fragrance, parfum or perfume properties as well as zero phthalates. With that said, go for toners with natural ingredients including, but not limited to:

- Aloe vera

- Chamomile

- Hyaluronic acid

- Rose water

- Salicylic acid

- Tea tree oil

- Witch hazel

- Vitamin E

Remember to read the label and select a product for your skin type. If you’re still feeling unsure, chat to a dermatologist or skincare professional.
