5 Curling tong tricks you need to know
Is there anything more inspiring than a head full of gorgeous, lively curls? We chat to the experts to help you get salon-worthy locks at home.
Deidré Geldenhuys, owner and head stylist at Piatra's Hair Design, says curling tong or straightener curls are a simple way to make a big style statement. However, you need to do your prep work if you want great results. Here are a few of her top tips and curling tong tricks for salon-worthy curls at home.
Start with clean, dry hair
Any oily residue can affect the pattern and longevity of your curls, so make sure your hair is properly cleansed before starting to style. And, there’s no point having clean hair, only to dirty it with a grimy styling tool! To quickly clean your wand or straightener, make sure it is turned off and cooled, before wiping with a damp cloth. For more stubborn residue, use a cloth dipped in surgical spirits to wipe off any grime.
Prep the hair
Always make sure that you use a thermal protectant every time you apply heat to your hair, whether it's in the form of a spray, balm or oil. If your curling tool has different heat settings, check that it’s set to the correct temperature before you begin – as finer hair will not need as a high a temperature as coarse hair. Also remember that if you use too low a temperature, the curl will not set properly, while too much heat will cause damage. “We’re all about finding that happy in-between temperature”, adds Deidré.
Embrace sectioning
It might seem like an unnecessary step, but trust us –it’s much easier to curl your hair in sections; take your time and part your hair into at least six sections with a comb and clips. “For first-time curlers it may seem like a daunting task, but practice makes perfect, I promise. After completing the curls, let them cool before brushing your goddess-like waves out”, says Deidré.
Keep your end look in mind
Going for a modern, tousled look? Clip your hair into thin, vertical sections and curl away from your face, keeping the ends a little bit straighter. Once your curls are cool, comb them out with a wide-tooth comb and scrunch with hairspray. After a more classic ‘50s pinup vibe? Curl in wider sections, towards your face. Wait for the hair to cool and brush it out with a soft brush before finishing with a nourishing oil.
Remember to treat your hair
Thermal styling can damage the hair if done too often or without heat protectant, so it's always a good idea to use a moisturising or replenishing treatment once a week.
