There’s no denying that the change in weather can be tough on anyone’s hair care routine, with each new season bringing its own set of unique challenges. Are you ready to make this your best hair summer yet?

Snip, snip – it’s time for a fresh trim

“Start by having your ends trimmed, as it will revive your winter curls and help your hair flourish through the season”, says Delcima. The winter air can be drying, causing damage, breakage and even spilt ends, which in turn damages natural healthy hair, as the spilt will continue to travel up the hair strand.

Add in protein treatments

“Swap out the deep conditioning and hot oil treatment once a month for protein treatments instead, as these will help strengthen your hair,” says Delcima. Natural hair is prone to damage and dehydration  - a protein treatment will help tackle prevent this, as well as protect your delicate strands from further damage.

Switch to a clarifying shampoo

“If you love spending time outdoors swimming, working out or other vigorous activities outdoors, then you may want to consider adding a clarifying shampoo to your hair care regimen,” suggests Delcima. A clarifying shampoo will help rinse the chlorine and other harmful chemicals out of your hair, as well as any sweaty build-up if you exercise frequently.

A leave-in conditioner with SPF = moisture + sun protection

The sun can also wreak havoc on your hair. Damaging UV rays can strip hair of its natural moisture - just as you would need to reapply sunscreen, the same applies to sunscreen for your hair.

“It’s best to use leave-in conditioner sprays that you can easily reapply to your hair every few hours without destroying your hairstyle. Hair sunscreen will also help protect your scalp from sun damage and sunburn as well,” says Delcima.

Avoid heat styling and drying techniques

Heat styling is particularly drying for natural hair, and in combination with the drying effects of the sun, this can be a lethal combination for the health of your natural hair.

Delcima suggets "wash and go" hairstyles as a favourite for the warmer months. “Protective hairstyles such as cornrows and braids also work well for this season, just remember to still keep the ends of your hair protected from the sun”, she adds.

Keep your hair hydrated from within

As the weather heats up it is important to remember to drink plenty of water and keep your crown moisturized to combat the sun’s drying rays.
