The festive season is often accompanied by overindulgence – and perhaps neglecting a few of your usual skincare practices – which means you aren't alone if your skin has entered the new year looking a bit worse for wear: spotty, blemished and dull.

If this sounds familiar, here is a five-step skincare routine to help transform your complexion, so that you can put your best face forward next year.

Cleanse

It all starts with clean skin - and, the product you use to do this is important, as different face-wash formulas are geared towards targeting specific concerns. If you are experiencing post-party-season breakouts, a gel or cream cleanser that removes excess oil and impurities without stripping or drying out your skin is your best bet.

Tone

We love the new wave of toners that double as mild daily exfoliants, which can be used instead of harsh scrubs. These are especially good choices if you are suffering from a breakout, as they help to unblock pores, remove dead skin cells and refine the texture of your skin for a smooth and spot-free complexion.

Moisturise

Many people make the mistake of foregoing moisturiser when their skin is oily or blemished, but this can actually aggravate the condition, as it can disrupt your skin’s protective barrier. Use a lotion that is lightweight and oil-free, but still provides enough moisture to keep your skin healthy.

Mask

Masking is a great way to treat specific skincare concerns, with plenty available – from clay to gel formulas – formulated to treat acne and breakouts. An overnight mask that banishes pimples and acne-causing bacteria while simultaneously adding moisture is a great option.

Treat

Have a stubborn pimple that just won’t budge? You may need to add a targeted treatment to your routine. A spot treatment that contains ingredients such as salicylic acid can be applied to the offending bump at night to see a significant reduction by morning. Revolution Pick-Me-Not Skincare Blemish Patches are loaded with salicylic acid to help break up congestion in pores, and tea tree oil to help soothe inflammation.
