Tooth whitening versus tooth bleaching

At-home teeth whitening has become a possibility of late, but there are many people who wonder whether it’s a good idea.  According to Dr Albert Janse van Noordwyk from Paarl Family Health, it all depends on your desired outcome. “People seldom realise that there is a subtle difference between tooth whitening and tooth bleaching,” says Dr Janse van Noordwyk. “Whitening is something you can do at home with store-bought products; bleaching is a more complicated process involving hydrogen or carbamide peroxide, and has to be applied or provided by a qualified practitioner.”

When it comes to choosing between professional dentist treatments or going the DIY route, there are two things you should consider when making your choice:

Do you want quick results?

If you want quick results, photo-chemical teeth whitening is your best option. This in-office procedure makes use of a catalyst such as a laser or blue light to whiten teeth and yields immediate results.

Do you want a cost-effective solution?

If you’re shopping around for a cost-effective teeth bleaching solution, an at-home chemical teeth whitening kit will suit your requirements. Your dentist will fit you with a custom-made tray for home use, and provide you with the chemically-activated formula that will whiten your teeth without the need for heat or ultraviolet rays. This formula contains potassium nitrate and fluoride, which help to improve oral health by strengthening enamel, decreasing sensitivity, and offering increased cavity prevention.

“It takes a little longer to take effect than the photo-chemical route, but great results can be achieved and maintained,” says Dr Janse van Noordwyk.
